My Way® Counseling Key Points

It's important to educate your patients about My Way and emergency contraception. When discussing My Way with your patient, it may help to review the following key messages:

My Way is an FDA-approved single-tablet, single-dose emergency contraceptive. It can help prevent a pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, sexual attack or contraceptive failure (if, for example, a condom slipped during intercourse or a woman skipped or forgot to take her birth control pill).

My Way works much like a woman's regular birth control pills to help prevent an unplanned pregnancy. It stops the release of an egg from the ovary, and may also prevent the fertilization of an egg (the uniting of sperm with the egg). My Way may also work by preventing the egg from attaching itself to the uterus (womb).

If a woman takes a My Way tablet after she is already pregnant, it will not affect the pregnancy. In other words, it will not affect a fertilized egg already attached to the uterus.

Women should take the single My Way tablet as soon as possible within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure.

My Way is most effective when taken sooner rather later. When My Way is taken as directed, nearly seven out of eight women who would have gotten pregnant will not become pregnant.

My Way should not be used as a substitute for regular birth control because it is not as effective as routine birth control methods.

My Way does not protect women from HIV infection (the virus that causes AIDS) or any other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Women may experience nausea when taking My Way. If a woman vomits within two hours of taking a My Way tablet, it may be advisable to take a repeat dose.

If a woman experiences severe abdominal pain after taking My Way, she may have an ectopic pregnancy and should seek medical attention immediately.
